Government announces consultation to increase planning fees

15th March 2023

In a bid to improve the capability, capacity, and overall operation of local planning authorities, the Government has opened a consultation on proposals to increase planning fees.

With considerable pressure on local planning authorities, which are heavily under-resourced, action is being taken to alleviate the strain and help boost the planning system as a whole.

What key changes are being proposed?

  • Planning fees to increase by 35% for major applications
  • Planning fees to increase by 25% for all other applications
  • Additional fees for tailored/fast-track services
  • New prior approval fee for the permitted development right allowing the Crown to develop sites within the perimeter of a closed defence site
  • For non-major applications, reduce the Planning Guarantee from 26 weeks to 16 weeks

When does the consultation close?

Feedback should be submitted before the consultation closes at 11.45 pm on 25th April 2023.

Jon Westerman, Director at Edgars, commented: “The proposed increase in planning fees is welcomed, given that the key driver is to ensure that local planning authorities are appropriately resourced to effectively engage in the development management function and deliver the quality of development that we can all be proud of.”
